Memorial
or Monumental carving skills gained
after serving an apprenticeship in the Monumental Masonry
trade. A small selection of Trade and Private Commissions
are shown below.
Commissioning an individual memorial will require decisions
in a way that choosing one from a catalogue will not. But
such personal involvement is part of the satisfaction that
the whole process can bring.
First Ideas
Some people will start out with a very clear idea of what
they want in terms of style and wording; others will be
very much feeling their way.

Film
Sets
Stage 1 : Polystyrene
can be cut and shaped via a 'hot wire' technique. We also
use wire brushes / nail brushes / saws to carve.
Other
techniques are used to create texture or aging effects,
such as splashing water onto the polystyrene and burning
the surface with a blow torch. Sand paper and knives are
used to sharpen edges and fine finish the surface before
coating and painting.
Stage 2 : For safe use on film sets the polystyrene is
coated with a fire retardant fibres acrylic, this also
forms a base colour ready for finishing paint effects.
