Animals in the Playground

As part of the refurbishment of a play area adjourning Priory School in Bedford, Andrew was commissioned to design and produce a sculpture for the site.  The aim was to involve the pupils of the school who regularly use the play area with as much as the project as possible.  By involving the children they would be taken through the processes of design and production.

During several visits to the school Andrew worked with the class, whereby ideas were drawn, modelled, and eliminated until three final designs were chosen; a tiger, a rabbit, and a tortoise.   The stone was selected and delivered to the school and again the children were involved in positioning the stone, Egyptian style, for the carving.  The work was carried out in the school grounds, thus enabling the pupils to view and take some part in the process.

On completion, the sculptures were located in the play area thus giving the children a fulfilling and compelling experience which will be remembered by them and the local community for many years to come.
